Recently while applying for an employment position with the Miami Teaching Fellows I was asked to write a 200 to 400 word essay explaining why I wanted to teach in high-need schools.
The key to successfully writing such an essay for employment purposes are threefold:
1. Differentiate yourself from other applicants.
2. Show some heart and passion for the position.
3. Display previous work performance and achieved results.
Here below is my essay, which I wrote for the Miami Teaching Fellows.
I want to teach in high-need schools because throughout my life I have always served where others did not dare to go. Personal safety for me is not as important as making a genuine impact with my life and helping humanity.
As a human rights activist and rescue relief workers, I severed at Ground Zero in NYC during 9/11; helped rebuild a home at the tsunami epicenter; comforted victims of genocide in Rwanda; spoke to leaders in East Timor during the war; inspired students & monks in Myanmar; promoted peace & reconciliation in Pakistan; and have been so deep into the bush of rural Africa where villagers had never before seen a white man.
As a minister who has touched over 50 countries and 6 continents, I know how to build bridges cross-culturally with other ethnicities. I understand the challenges various races face and respectfully appreciate their struggle. Because I can relate and feel others pain, I can heal their hearts and empower them unto greatness.
As a life coach and international transformational speaker, I can connect well with students and communicate in such a way to ignite a passion for peak performance. As an author and poet, I effectively use words that resonate and captivate hearts within.
African American students and Hispanic students love me because I have been to their countries overseas and understand their culture. I can speak some phrases in the dialects of East Africa and Latin America.
Youth throughout the world have been changed and transformed by my words of affirmation, unconditional love, and uplifting inspirational messages. My heartfelt passion for students makes me a preferred favorite in the classroom.
